Black Pepper

Today, @antonlee7 recommended that I give Black Pepper a try. Then, coincidentally, my mom also told me she wanted to try it, so we headed over, and I was not disappointed! We ordered the Satay combo skewers, the Roti Prata, the Singaporean Black Pepper Beef Tenderloin, and the Indian Mee Goreng. The skewers had beef and chicken, and they were both fantastic! (the beef especially) They were glazed with a sweet sauce and the meat was all cooked to perfection. The roti was also great. It was flaky, crunchy, and chewy all at the same time, and it paired very nicely with the curry. However, the Singaporean Black pepper beef tenderloin was not as great. There wasn’t enough beef on the plate, and it was too oily. Similarly, the Indian Mee Goreng was not fantastic. The noodles weren’t exceptional and the flavor profile did not stand out. The prawns and chicken were nice though. We also got a side of coconut rice, and the coconut taste really stood out. We paired it with both the black pepper beef and left over curry sauce from the roti. It wasn’t bad! After those appetizers and main courses, we ordered a dessert of black sticky rice and Pandan Panna Cotta (I forgot the name of the dish). The black sticky rice was pretty good. The rice grains had a good texture and when paired with the firm, yet creamy Pandan Panna Cotta, the blend of textures and flavors sits well in your mouth (especially if you eat it with a blueberry or raspberry!) In the google reviews I read, many customers received complementary desserts, but I assumed that was because of the somewhat recent grand opening. I wasn’t expecting any, but to my surprise, we got a free dish of fried bananas a la mode. The waiter explained that this was to make up for the unusually long wait we had for our food, specifically the roti. It was quite a pleasant surprise! The fried bananas were pretty good, but I feel like the two scoops of ice cream were the real star. One scoop was of coconut ice cream and the other was of candied ginger. The coconut ice cream was so smooth and creamy, with a rich coconut flavor due to the real coconut flakes they add. The candied ginger ice cream also had a powerful taste of ginger. Overall, I would recommend coming here, but focus more on the appetizers and desserts. The main courses aren’t amazing.
